Doubting Dogma

I grew up in the Mormon Church, but after years of discomfort and feeling like I didn't belong, my religious doubts came to a head. I'm Molly Un-Mormon. Join me and my friend and co-host Ris McCool as we talk about Mormonism and my journey away from the church.

Welcome to the Doubting Dogma podcast, the accompanying show to the Doubting Dogma blog, where we pair Molly Un-Mormon, a former Mormon now "doubting her dogma" (see what we did there?), and the corrupting hussy that told her about CogDiss, Marissa Alexa McCool. Together, they'll try to work out what's going on in the world while also having fun at the story's expense.

This week, Molly talks with Greg Sullivan, top patron of the show and fellow ex-Mo. They chat about Greg's Mormon experience and end the episode joking about driving across Wyoming and other boring places. Check out Greg's writing at http://www.leavingthemormons.com/

After technical difficulties made them record late, Molly and Ris talk about the end of the world according to David Meade, a "Christian numerologist" who claims it will take place on Sept 23. (http://www.foxnews.com/science/2017/09/15/biblical-prophecy-claims-world-will-end-on-sept-23-conspiracy-theorists-claim.html)

Despite doing good works by helping after Hurricane Harvey, the Mormon Church proves once again that they strive for bigotry by giving monetary support to bakers that want to discriminate so they don't catch the gay. (http://www.sltrib.com/news/2017/09/12/mormon-church-utah-senators-lend-their-support-to-bakers-refusing-to-make-cake-for-gay-weddings/)

And finally Molly giggles a lot over her time volunteering at the zoo and spending time with animals.

After starting with a listener question, Molly and Ris talk about the recent divisions within the atheist community and the underlying misogyny and double standards that are unfortunately still present despite the idea that we're supposed to use reason. Stemming off of that, they also talk about the Head Cheeto's decision to act on his transphobic tweets by putting the trans ban back in place for the military.

(First off, I'd like to apologize in advance for the audio quality on this. I started hearing some static when we started recording after moving to a different room so we wouldn't get my husband gaming in the background. I thought it was just on my end, not on Zencastr's. It was still a fun conversation and I hope the static doesn't distract from it too badly.)

This week, Andrew Torrez from the Opening Arguments Podcast (http://openargs.com/) joins Molly to talk about his deconversion and how he felt when he went with his wife to Mormon church when they had started dating. They finish the episode with a quick rundown of the Crazy Ark Debacle of Ken Ham trying to pull Noah's Wool over the Kentucky State Legislature's eyes.

This week, Molly and Ris chat with Tank, an Ex-Mo that reached out to Molly after hearing her on Naked Mormonism. They talk about being raised in the church and the cognitive dissonance involved with compartmentalizing everything. They also talk about the temple rituals and how learning the details was the straw that broke Tank's belief.

Keeping with the theme, Bryce shares with us the story of the Willie and Martin Handcart Companies and the horrors they faced while crossing the plains after a series of bad logistical decisions.

It turns out the Book of Mormon can be improved with voices, as Ris demonstrates as she reads a chapter while doing several different impersonations. Molly talks about the law of tithing that was addressed in the Mormon's General Conference last weekend and Ris talks about her new novel that will be out at ReasonCon titled "False Start".

Welcome to the Doubting Dogma podcast, the accompanying show to the Doubting Dogma blog, where we pair a former Mormon now "doubting her dogma" (see what we did there?) and the corrupting hussy that told her about CogDiss, Marissa Alexa McCool. Together, they'll try to work out what's going on in the world while also having fun at the story's expense.

This week, we discuss what it's like in the workplace and certain stereotypes that surround jobs. Then we move on to a dramatic reading randomly from the Book of Mormon, and it makes Ris go mad with no red pen to correct.

Welcome to the Doubting Dogma podcast, the accompanying show to the Doubting Dogma blog, where we pair a former Mormon now "doubting her dogma" (see what we did there?) and the corrupting hussy that told her about CogDiss, Marissa Alexa McCool. This week, we're joined by "Detective" Matthew Maxon talking about military life with (and without) religion, his future podcast, and MGM.
